It seemed to me that the big challenge for Germany, being at the centre of the Eurozone, is to stop using the idea of multiculturalism as and when it sees fit, when it’s convenient to use it for political or economic purposes, which both exploits and scapegoats multiculturalism for its own political agenda. The future of Europe depends on transparency – governments should clearly state how Europe benefits from diversity, open up and admit when the financial sector has failed society, teach colonial history with nuance and honesty and face up to the past so we can all understand the present and move towards a truly unified future, the potential of which I saw in the eyes and smile of little Shira Helmstetter. Her generation will have to tear down some of the new walls that are sprouting up, drawing, perhaps, some inspiration from the late Afro-German poet May Ayim, who, shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall, defiantly asserted her intention to insert plurality into German national identity in her 1990 poem ‘borderless and brazen: a poem against the German “u-not-y”’, which begins:

i will be African

even if you want me to be german

and i will be german

even if my blackness does not suit you
